An inspiration to all women, Gabrielle Chanel’s start in life was far from charmed. As an orphan she was raised by nuns who taught her to sew – a skill that would become invaluable for her life’s work.
Coco (a nickname she gave to herself) was the birth of an extraordinary character; daring, free, and ahead of her time. Arguably the most influential designer of all time, Coco Chanel revolutionised the way women wore their clothes, with classic wardrobe staples, which even today people can style in a way that suits them.
A wardrobe freed from constraints and superfluity, tweaked with masculine accents, created a visionary allure that has become timeless and yet wildly modern. Pearls casually paired with iconic perfumes have created a signature style. That of a pioneer whose lifestyle and multiple facets forged the values of the House she founded, and who remains an inspiration for all women.
One of her famous quotes ‘you were born an original, don't become a copy’, rings true in our ethos here at Claudia Bradby – ‘pearls as unique as you’.
Gabrielle Chanel was also quoted saying ‘Always dress to make yourself feel young – this means being free and easy and unpretentious in your clothes. You have to breathe and move and sit without being conscious of what you’ve got on.’
“Initially I took this to mean you need to ‘look’ young,” says Claudia.
“But I had misread the ‘feel’ young. I will hold on to this quote, which chimes with my hatred of being ‘dressed up’ and uncomfortable in myself. I aim for all my own pearl designs to update how you feel when you wear them, a bit closer to who you want to be, but never to be overpowering, just embellishing your spirit.”
